Sunday’s Sexism Summary! – September 6th

Hey there!

I’m gonna be completely honest here and say I almost forgot to do this today! I’ve been pretty busy as I’ve been organising a local donation drop event in my hometown. If you’re in the Hampshire area, we’re collecting donations on Saturday 12th in Fleet! It’s had loads of support which has been so amazing to see. People have been offering to collect donations off people who can’t make it to the event and bring them on their behalf. Restored my faith in this largely Conservative/UKIP area. Tomorrow I’m going to be doing an interview at a local radio station which is pretty exciting! So hopefully we’ll get even more people involved.

Anyway, sorry for that little update – onto what you came for…

1. Scotland could potentially add tighter control to abortion rights

abortion scotland

From The Telegraph:

“Sources close to the discussions between UK and Scottish ministers said the “direction of travel” is that agreement will be reached to add abortion law to the Scotland Bill, which is transferring a swathe of new powers to Edinburgh.

This would allow MSPs to increase or lower the existing 24-week limit for abortions, which currently applies across the UK. Alex Salmond has previously suggested it could be reduced to 20 weeks.”

Yawn. More middle aged blokes trying to control what happens to our bodies. Can they give it a rest? Some of us are trying to have lives, here.

2. Chrissie Hynde blamed victims for sexual assault. Thanks babes.

In an interview with the Sunday Times (which you can’t actually read online unless you want to pay £12 for a years worth of access. No thanks) the Pretenders singer Chrissy Hynde spoke out about being sexually assaulted when she was 21. Now, I am sincerely offering my sympathy to her because honestly nobody deserves that. But she made it sound like she, and other women who are sexually assaulted, are to blame:

“Technically speaking, however you want to look at it, this was all my doing and I take full responsibility. You can’t paint yourself into a corner and then say whose brush is this? You have to take responsibility. I mean, I was naive,” she said.

“You know, if you don’t want to entice a rapist, don’t wear high heels so you can’t run from him. If you’re wearing something that says ‘Come and f*** me’, you’d better be good on your feet.”

To quote Miranda Priestley from The Devil Wears Prada – “no, no.”

This launched a wider debate about victim blaming. Loose Women did a poll for crying out loud (as if it should still be a question!) and when it closed 12.15% of people said they think women can be blamed for being raped. I know that’s quite a small amount but a) the question shouldn’t have needed to be raised in the first place and b) that should be 0%.

3. This

It’s the little things. This happens quite frequently to be honest. She’s not “somebody’s wife”, she’s her own person.

4. Halfords think that girls want to look pretty and boys are ready for action

This has to be a joke, right?

5. Hello U posted this picture for an article and it looks really weird

I find it hilarious that they think that looks better than just… having the nipples on show?

Also the article itself.. why you tryna tell women that their boobs need changing?

6. The “Idiots of the UK” twitter page (cry)

I’m saying “cry” cos this page usually provides a lot of laughs for me but it’s let me down here. They’re comparing two women and saying “two types of females” as if the second one is wrong. In fact, both of these statements are totally fine. If she wanna be a hoe she can be a hoe. Don’t shame her for it, jeez.

7. This littering advert

Alright, in case you guys haven’t got the memo yet – boys = smart, girls = pretty. Got it?

8. A pregnant woman GAINED WEIGHT

kim k

omg  you guys kim k has gained so much weight how gross !!

9. Katie Hopkins attacked women who breastfeed in public. Quelle surprise

katie hopkins

I know I shouldn’t even talk about this vile woman cos she thrives off attention, but this is something that has been pissing me off for a while now. BOOBS ARE FOR FEEDING PEOPLE. Breasts aren’t “inappropriate” – they were designed for feeding our offspring. In some cultures they laugh at how Westerners sexualise breasts. They aren’t inherently sexual, they aren’t genitalia (for all the men comparing it to them ‘whipping their knob out’), and if you see it as disgusting then you are the problem. End of.

10. And lastly… why is this news?

jodie marsh

OK, now to finish with I actually thought it would be good to post something nice, to restore our faith in humanity after all that grossness.

This video is so heartwarming. Loads of Germans cheered as refugees arrived in Munich, where people were waiting with food and water and even sweets for the kids! Similar things have been happening in Austria too, where people were waiting at the station with supplies ready to welcome them in. Makes me wish I lived on mainland Europe!

Watch it here

That’s all from me for now, and remember “nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent” (Eleanor Roosevelt)
